ABSTRACT

The conventional procedure used in all of India's major regions is attendance monitoring on paper with pens. Although the final data is computerized, it takes a long time to get from a classroom to a database. The effectiveness of the classes is directly impacted by the number of absences. The attendance takes up almost half of the lecture's allotted time. The alternative method that is being used involves using fingerprints, but even this approach is ineffective since it takes so long. Due to the illnesses (COVID-19) spreading over the world, however, the situation as it stands right now does not make this the best course of action. Therefore, it will be advisable to develop a contactless and more efficient. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic forced many education providers to pivot rapidly their models of education to increased online provision, raising concerns that this may accentuate effects of digital poverty on education. Digital footprints created by learning analytics systems contain a wealth of information about student engagement. Combining these data with student demographics can provide significant insights into the behaviours of different groups. Here we present a comparison of students' data from disadvantaged versus non-disadvantaged backgrounds on four different engagement measures. Our results showed some indications of effects of disadvantage on student engagement in a UK university, but with differential effects for asynchronously versus synchronously delivered digital material. Pre-pandemic, students from disadvantaged backgrounds attended more live teaching, watched more pre-recorded lectures, and checked out more library books than students from non-disadvantaged backgrounds. Peri-pandemic, where teaching was almost entirely online, these differences either disappeared (attendance and library book checkouts), or even reversed such that disadvantaged students viewed significantly fewer pre-recorded lectures. These findings have important implications for future research on student engagement and for institutions wishing to provide equitable opportunities to their students, both peri- and post-pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This dissertation research study aimed to determine the predictors of early literacy skills in kindergarteners with dyslexia familial risk. The home literacy environment, preschool attendance, and parental self-efficacy are known predictors of early literacy skills, specifically letter naming knowledge, in typically developing children. Letter naming knowledge is an early literacy skill that is important to future reading achievement and outcomes. Letter naming knowledge is also a powerful pre-literacy predictor of dyslexia. Dyslexia commonly manifest as difficulties in acquiring basic reading skills and is highly heritable. The population for this study was primary caregivers of kindergarteners with a first degree relative with a diagnosis of dyslexia. Participants completed the Home Literacy Checklist, Tool to Measure Parenting Self-Efficacy via an online survey with questions regarding preschool attendance, letter naming knowledge skills, and the presence of a diagnosis of dyslexia among first degree relatives. SPSS Statistics (Version 28) was used to run descriptive statistics. The sample was comprised of 12 primary caregivers. This sample size was not appropriate for the chosen analysis of multiple regression. Using exploratory data analysis, the data was organized and summarized. Due to an inadequate sample size caused by a low response rate, no conclusions could be drawn from this data. The research questions were not answered and there were no findings. COVID-19 restrictions impacted research sites and the level of participation, with participants being less available, school closures, and mandatory quarantines, creating a difficult atmosphere for completion of this research study. As a result, the lack of data during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns led to several revisions of the research plan. The revisions involved eliminating the need for standardized test scores, using primary caregiver report to determine the level of difficulty of letter naming knowledge of the kindergarten student, and using social media to recruit participants. Recommendations for further research were comprised of ways to increase the pool of participants by expanding inclusion criteria, eliminating the use of standardized test scores, considering the length of the survey, and the use of social media along with an incentive. ABSTRACT

This qualitative study analyzed pedagogical effects of multilayer mitigation in a Thai classroom. The triangulated data set were confidential, comprising teachers' voluntary anonymous information, pedagogical views and opinions, respectively. First, pupils' low absence rates enabled pedagogical focus on learning losses, which were mainly skills. The second effect was related to assessment. None of the teachers mentioned test results as learning loss indicators but regarded learning and qualified assessment as dynamic processes. An interesting dilemma was the learning loss measurements by non-pedagogical experts. Mostly those were presented as test scores, working hour counts, or annual formalities. However, optimized learning strategies' research had existed for decades, being responded better by these pupils. The third effect was the improved resilience of pupils and caretakers. Initially worried parents turned relieved. Resilience fostered the intrinsic motivation of all. When compared to some countries, firmer resilience made the difference in learning loss endurance for this group. "All-inclusive" mitigation had given families meaningful support. They shared visions of community roles, mediated by teachers and school management. The latter were backed by epidemiologists and medical experts. Further studies should discuss schools in a longer timeframe. External, quantified test scores without in-depth pedagogical analyses seem outdated by the early fourth pandemic year.

ABSTRACT

It started with a simple little filler in "USA Today" 25 years ago. It showed a broken student desk with cobwebs on it and offered data on "average yearly absences" in Japan, Germany, and the United States. Assessing my own data, I verified that they were on point and proceeded to discuss why this was a major hurdle for our kids and what could be done. Now, 25 years later, I am revisiting this topic, but through the virtual lens, including new data.

ABSTRACT

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic required a rapid expansion of tele dermatology services. Objective(s): Analyse demographic shifts in a pediatric dermatology practice session with children of colour. Method(s): A retrospective chart review of pediatric dermatology patients seen in the four practice weeks preceding the New York COVID-19 lockdown and comparable tele dermatology visits during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Demographic differences (e.g., race, age, gender and household income) were analysed. Result(s): A greater proportion of patients seen were White during lockdown (59.7%), compared to pre-lockdown (43.6%), with a reduction in Asian patients seen in lockdown (6.0%) compared to prelockdown (24.5%). A lower proportion of no-show patients (4.3%, 3/70 scheduled) were noted in lockdown compared to pre-lockdown (16%, 18/112). Preferred provider organizations and higher-income zip codes were more common for children seen during lockdown. Limitation(s): The sample addresses a limited New York pediatric dermatology practice during a short time-period. Conclusion(s): White patients and patients with preferred provider organizations were more likely to access telehealth, supporting disparity in tele dermatology services. These results demonstrate reduced healthcare access for lower-income and Asian children during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

ABSTRACT

Attendance marking in a classroom is a tedious and time-consuming task. Due to a large number of students present, there is always a possibility of proxy. In recent times, the task of automatic attendance marking has been extensively addressed via the use of fingerprint-based biometric systems, radio frequency identification tags, etc. However, these RFID systems lack the factor of dependability and due to COVID-19 use of fingerprint-based systems is not advisable. Instead of using these conventional methods, this paper presents an automated contactless attendance system that employs facial recognition to record student attendance and a gesture sensor to activate the camera when needed, thereby consuming minimal power. The resultant data is subsequently stored in Google Spreadsheets, and the reports can be viewed on the webpage. ABSTRACT

Information regarding the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on cervical cancer in mainland China is lacking. We explored its impact on the hospital attendance of patients with primary cervical cancer. We included 1918 patients with primary cervical cancer who initially attended Harbin Medical University Cancer Hospital between January 23, 2019, and January 23, 2021. Attendance decreased by 31%, from 1135 in 2019 to 783 in 2020, mainly from January to June (𝜒2 = 73.362, P < .001). The percentage of patients detected by screening decreased from 12.1% in January-June 2019 to 5.8% in January-June 2020 (𝜒2 = 7.187, P = .007). Patients with stage I accounted for 28.4% in 2020 significantly lower than 36.6% in 2019 (𝜒2 = 14.085, P < .001), and patients with stage III accounted for 27.1% in 2020 significantly higher than 20.5% in 2019 (𝜒2 = 11.145, P < .001). Waiting time for treatment was extended from 8 days (median) in January-June and July-December 2019 to 16 days in January-June (𝜒2 = 74.674, P < .001) and 12 days in July-December 2020 (𝜒2 = 37.916, P < .001). Of the 179 patients who delayed treatment, 164 (91.6%) were for the reasons of the healthcare providers. Compared to 2019, the number of patients in Harbin or non-Harbin in Heilongjiang Province and outside the province decreased, and cross-regional medical treatment has been hindered. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted cervical cancer patient attendance at the initial phase. These results are solid evidence that a strategy and mechanism for the effective attendance of cervical cancer patients in response to public health emergencies is urgently needed.

Objective: Missed patient appointments have a substantial negative impact on patient care, child health and well-being, and clinic functioning. This study aims to identify health system interface and child/family demographic characteristics as potential predictors of appointment attendance in a pediatric outpatient neuropsychology clinic. Method: Pediatric patients (N = 6,976 across 13,362 scheduled appointments) who attended versus missed scheduled appointments at a large, urban assessment clinic were compared on a broad array of factors extracted from the medical record, and the cumulative impact of significant risk factors was examined. Results: In the final multivariate logistic regression model, health system interface factors that significantly predicted more missed appointments included a higher percentage of previous missed appointments within the broader medical center, missing pre-visit intake paperwork, assessment/testing appointment type, and visit timing relative to the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. more missed appointments prior to the pandemic). Demographic characteristics that significantly predicted more missed appointments in the final model included Medicaid (medical assistance) insurance and greater neighborhood disadvantage per the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). Waitlist length, referral source, season, format (telehealth vs. in-person), need for interpreter, language, and age were not predictive of appointment attendance. Taken together, 7.75% of patients with zero risk factors missed their appointment, while 22.30% of patients with five risk factors missed their appointment. Conclusions: Pediatric neuropsychology clinics have a unique array of factors that impact successful attendance, and identification of these factors can help inform policies, clinic procedures, and strategies to decrease barriers, and thus increase appointment attendance, in similar settings.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To find out variation in hospital attendance and admission for various infectious diseases (IDs) during the national lockdown as compared to prelockdown era. Materials and Methods: This observational descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at a state-level ID hospital in West Bengal. Data related to the turnout of ID patients at the hospital outpatient department and indoor admission during the lockdown and unlock phases of 2020 were collected by review of hospital records and compared with the pre-COVID period of 2019. Collected data were entered into an MS Excel sheet, and analysis was performed by SPSS 20.0. Results: Since April 2020, inpatient and outpatient turnout has gone far below the similar months of 2019. Outpatient consultation, indoor admission, anti-rabies clinic attendance, and childhood immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases had decreased significantly by 66.9%, 84.3%, 87%, and 85.2%, respectively, during lockdown (April-June 2020) compared to January-March 2020. Dramatic reduction noticed in hospital admission of diarrhea (93%), measles (96.5%), chicken pox (99.2%), acute respiratory illness (93.9%), diphtheria (66.7%), rabies (66.6%), and typhoid (98.2%) patients;while no cases of tetanus, swine flu, meningococcal meningitis, and mumps were admitted during lockdown period. Conclusion: It is evidenced that measures put in place by the government to curb COVID-19 spread disrupted other ID patient attendance at hospitals. Stigma and fear of contracting COVID-19 during hospital visits and unavailability of transport due to lockdown could be the main reason for reduced attendance.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic was an inherently stressful global crisis that was associated with weight gain for over 40% of the American public. Building on previous research, we draw on recently collected national survey data from the United States to examine the effects of religious attendance (both in-person and virtual), the sense of divine control, and religious/spiritual (R/S) struggles on pandemic weight gain. A series of logistic regression models were conducted. Our findings suggest that divine control and monthly in-person religious attendance were associated with a lower risk of pandemic weight gain, while R/S struggles were associated with a higher risk of weight gain. Our results reveal the complex role that religiosity can play with respect to pandemic weight gain.

BACKGROUND: While the COVID-19 crisis has had numerous global negative impacts, it has also presented an imperative for mental health care systems to make digital mental health interventions a part of routine care. Accordingly, through necessity, many Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) programs transitioned to telehealth, despite little information on clinical outcomes compared with face-to-face treatment delivery. This study examined differences in client engagement (i.e. attendance) of DBT: delivered face-to-face prior to the first COVID-19 lockdown in Australia and New Zealand; delivered via telehealth during the lockdown; and delivered post-lockdown. Our primary outcomes were to compare: [1] client attendance rates of DBT individual therapy delivered face-to-face with delivery via telehealth, and [2] client attendance rates of DBT skills training delivered face-to-face compared with delivery via telehealth. METHODS: DBT programs across Australia and New Zealand provided de-identified data for a total of 143 individuals who received DBT treatment provided via telehealth or face-to-face over a six-month period in 2020. Data included attendance rates of DBT individual therapy sessions; attendance rates of DBT skills training sessions as well as drop-out rates and First Nations status of clients. RESULTS: A mixed effects logistic regression model revealed no significant differences between attendance rates for clients attending face-to-face sessions or telehealth sessions for either group therapy or individual therapy. This result was found for clients who identified as First Nations persons and those who didn't identify as First Nations persons. CONCLUSIONS: Clients were as likely to attend their DBT sessions over telehealth as they were face-to-face during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. These findings provide preliminary evidence that providing DBT over telehealth may be a viable option to increase access for clients, particularly in areas where face-to-face treatment is not available. Further, based on the data collected in this study, we can be less concerned that offering telehealth treatment will compromise attendance rates compared to face-to-face treatment. Further research is needed comparing clinical outcomes between treatments delivered face-to-face compared delivery via telehealth.

ABSTRACT

Background: Assessment of the prevalence and correlates of educational risk and school support needs of children with cystic fibrosis (CF) is limited. Educational support for people with CF has become even more pressing with the onset of COVID-19 and the dramatic changes seen in the education system nationally. Method(s): A cross-sectional needs assessment survey for pediatric and adult CF center care team members across the United States was distributed to assess student and family school needs, resources, services offered, and current processes for identification of concerns and intervention. Care teams were asked to complete the survey as a group or specify respondents who routinely provide school support. Result(s): The survey was sent to 3684 individuals within the CF care center network, on April 1, 2022, with a closure date of April 22, 2022. Preliminary results at time of this submission include 56 survey responses, completed primarily by social workers (40%) and physicians (23%), representing approximately 20% of all centers. Thirty-eight percent of respondents reported that their center administered a screening tool to assess general school functioning routinely or as needed. Specific school topics most widely assessed included need for CF care (treatments and medications) to occur at school (73%), concerns about emotional and behavioral functioning in the school setting (70%), CF daily care burden affecting school attendance and performance (63%), and CF-specific needs in university settings (63%). According to the care team report, families most often asked for help with school accommodations related to ability to carry enzymes (74%), carrying awater bottle (50%), additional bathroom passes (43%), and ability to step out of the classroom as needed for gastrointestinal problems (50%). Nurses, program coordinators, and social workers are the team members addressing school needs most often (55%, 42%, and 90%, respectively). Sixty-two percent of respondents reported having access to a hospital-based teacher for education support during inpatient stays, 10% had access to school services or educational support, and 5% had access to someone with a background or training in education or teaching (other than hospital-based teacher) for ambulatory care. Upon closure of the survey, the above data will be updated, and more complete identification of current resources and future needs will be described at the 2022 North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference. Conclusion(s): This survey will be the most comprehensive assessment to date of ongoing school services at CF centers nationally. Background: Previous studies have found that the widespread implementation of telehealth for outpatient mental health treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with reduced no-show rates and increases in total number of appointments. However, it is unclear to what degree this is due to increased accessibility provided by telehealth, rather than to increased consumer demand for services fueled by the pandemic-related exacerbation of mental health needs. To shed light on this question, the present analysis examined changes in attendance rates for outpatient, home-, and school-based programs at a community mental health center in southeastern Michigan. Disparities in treatment utilization associated with socioeconomic status were also examined. Methods: Two-proportion z-tests were conducted to examine changes in attendance rates, and Pearson correlations were calculated using the median income level and attendance rate by zip code to examine disparities in utilization associated with socioeconomic status. Results: The proportion of appointments kept after telehealth implementation was statistically significantly higher for all outpatient programs, but not for any home-based programs. Specifically, absolute increases in the proportion of appointments kept ranged from 0.05 to 0.18 for outpatient programs, representing relative increases of 9.2% to 30.2%. Furthermore, before telehealth implementation, there was a strong positive correlation between income and attendance rate for all outpatient programs (ranging from r = 0.50 to 0.56). After telehealth implementation, there were no longer any significant correlations. Discussion: Results highlight the utility of telehealth in increasing treatment attendance and mitigating disparities in treatment utilization associated with socioeconomic status. These findings are highly relevant to ongoing discussions surrounding the long-term fate of evolving insurance and regulatory guidelines pertaining to telehealth.

Objective: This study sought to identify the impact of implementing the new postpartum care (individualized rescheduling postpartum visit) with telemedicine on postpartum services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study design: This is a retrospective cohort study conducted at Srinagarind Hospital, a tertiary hospital in northeast Thailand, to compare patient data before and after implementation. Delivery and postpartum data from May 2019 to December 2020 were retrieved from the hospital database. Intervention was implemented in March 2020. Data were analyzed to evaluate postpartum contact, contraceptive use, and breastfeeding using Wilcoxon rank sum and Chi-squared tests. Results: There was a significant increase in postpartum contact from 48.0% (95% CI. 45.8 to 50.3) before the implementation of telemedicine to 64.6% (95% CI. 61.9 25 to 67.2) after (adjusted OR 1.5, 95% CI. 1.2 to 1.8). In the post-intervention group, contraception use also increased significantly (84.7% vs 49.7%; p < 0.001), and a higher proportion of women relied on long-acting reversible contraception (16.6% vs 5.7%; p < 0.001). However, patients in the post-intervention group were less likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding (46.6% vs 75.1%; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Rescheduling the timing of a comprehensive visit accompanied by telemedicine support improved postpartum contact and contraceptive utilization, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. However, the observed decrease in exclusive breastfeeding highlights the need for better telehealth support.ImplicationOur findings support that individualized postpartum care with telemedicine is a feasible and useful approach to sustain services during a pandemic.

PURPOSE: COVID-19 pandemic restrictions ceased the opportunity for face-to-face group exercise classes with at risk populations, such as cancer patients, forcing an adaptation to online exercise programming. The purpose of this study was to compare the attendance rates and correlates of face-to-face exercise programming pre-COVID-19 to online programming delivered during the first year of pandemic restrictions. METHOD: The sample was comprised from 1189 patient records between 2018 and 2021. Data analysis was based around the three primary research questions: (i) whether the volume of attendance in online exercise programming differed from the previous face-to-face programming; (ii) whether there were any differences in attendee demographics between online and face-to-face classes; and (iii) whether there were specific correlates of online attendance that can inform future exercise programming. RESULTS: Class attendance increased significantly when online exercise classes were introduced during the first year of the pandemic when compared to face-to-face attendance the prior years (p < .01). Multiple demographic findings were also observed including age, gender, and geographic differences. CONCLUSION: While COVID-19 has effected the ability to deliver face-to-face exercise programs for cancer patients, online programming has proved a promising delivery model with greater geographical reach. The approach, however, has gender and age differences in program attendance so targeted programming to reach specific cancer patient demographics may need attention. These results add to the continuing research in the area of online exercise and online programming strategies offering an effective option for cancer patients to achieve targeted exercise prescription.

The current climate emergency concerns and the COVID-19 pandemic demand urgent action to maintain healthy indoor environments in energy efficient ways. Promoting good indoor environments, in particular, increasing ventilation levels, has been a prominent strategy to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission indoors. However, this strategy could be detrimental to thermal comfort, particularly during the heating season in buildings located in temperate climate zones. This paper presents research conducted in two primary schools in South Wales (UK) where the temperature, relative humidity and the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration levels were monitored. The study monitored six classrooms and two communal spaces in the two schools during the academic year 2021/2022, the first academic year back to teaching and learning in school buildings after home-schooling and educational disruptions due to COVID-19 lockdowns. The study investigated the actions taken by teachers and pupils to balance the thermal comfort needs while minimising CO2 concentration levels. We conducted user studies to explore the comfort perceptions by pupils and teachers in relation to the thermal conditions and the freshness of air in the monitored classrooms. The paper identifies opportunities where end-users, teachers and pupils engaged with the management of the indoor environmental conditions and adopted actions to balance the requirement of reducing CO2 concentration levels while promoting thermal comfort. ABSTRACT

Over the past four decades, studies have consistently shown that regular attendance at religious services is associated with better mental and physical health. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many congregations paused in-person religious services and moved their worship rituals online. The ways that churches have responded to the threat of infectious disease require new conceptualizations and operationalizations of religious attendance and novel comparisons of the causes and consequences of virtual and in-person attendance. Analyses of data collected from a national probability sample of Americans (n = 1,717) show that while in-person religious attendance is associated with better mental and physical health, virtual attendance is unrelated to both outcomes in fully adjusted models. Taken together, these findings suggest that the association between religious attendance and health during a global pandemic may be contingent on physical proximity and the nature of the social and experiential aspects of religious worship.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, information concerning attendance at cultural activities and arts participation has not been fully explored. Thus, this manuscript aims to explore the factors related to attendance at cultural and artistic activities during the shutdown period. With that purpose, we use the 2018, 2019 and 2020 MODECULT datasets (n = 1994, n = 1978, n = 1663, respectively) to perform a logistic regression analysis. Results suggest that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, being young, high education attainment, interest in cultural activities, and being familiar with cultural and artistic activities are positively associated with attendance at plays, music performances, dance performances, exhibitions and movies. Contrary, availability of information, perception of prices, perception of free time and cultural offering near home show negative relationships with those same categories. These findings have relevant implications on cultural policies, regarding the aspects that affect culture and arts participation in crisis times.
